I was fortunate enough to grow up in the bustling, richly cultured, trilingual city of Hong Kong, a place that is renowned for its vibrant mix of Eastern and Western influences. My first language, or native tongue as it is often referred to, is Cantonese. This enchanting, rich, and expressive language has always been a part of me and is the language I naturally think in. However, the educational system of Hong Kong places great emphasis on the prominence of two other languages, English and Mandarin. Hence, these two were considered staple subjects during my school years and I therefore gained proficiency in both over time. Consequently, I have come to be competent in all three. My command over English, in particular, seems to catch many by surprise. Notably, because my pronunciation is almost indistinguishable from a native speaker, drawing incorrect assumptions from local English people that I might have spent a significant part of my life growing up in the United Kingdom. In addition to that, throughout my life, I've taken enormous strides in my Mandarin skills. So much so, that today, I can confidently claim that my Mandarin proficiency is of an exceptionally high standard. This skill has been incredibly helpful when traveling, enabling me to effortlessly communicate with locals during my extensive travels to Mandarin-speaking regions, like mainland China and Taiwan. The ability to interact in their native language opened up avenues of culture and experience that could have otherwise been missed. I grew up in a bilingual family so languages have always been an interest of mine, which I will be pursuing at university where I hope to delve deeper into the cultural heritage that is related to languages. At A Level though, I studied maths and further maths alongside French and Russian, and this mix between criticism thinking, problem solving, and creative analysis has been extremely rewarding and complimentary. I’ve been very active since I was little, a competitive gymnast for Great Britain until 4 years ago, and since then I have done a mixture of dance training, cross country, and yoga keeping me consistently energised. To relax, though, I love to read- particularly historical fictions as I find the response of characters to their environment fascinating. I would love to work more with people as I’ve loved helping in school, so hopefully tutoring will allow for that. I have tutored in school as a part of a helpers program for younger year groups, also worked with children running a gymnastics club coaching them for competitions. Both were very engaging for me it feels extremely valuable to be able to share knowledge and help others.
