I'm currently studying animal management online, and looking for part-time work to do on the side. I've cared for animals with a variety of temperaments, so I know the importance of working at their pace. I'm happy to spend the whole time cuddling, or just simply existing in their space. If wanted, I'll happily take them out in my car (either in my the boot or seatbelted in the back, depending on your preference) to explore new areas, or just stay in the local area. If a walk isn't wanted, I'll simply provided companionship and play
In June 2020, I completed the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Animal Management, at Berkshire College of Agriculture. My overall grade for the course was a distinction, gained through a variety of practical and written assignments over the course of 2 years. This course has given me not only theoretical knowledge on the zoo keeping industry, but due to the fact that this college has a zoo licence, I have had the opportunity to expand my practical experience. The campus is split into four main sections: zoo, exotics, small mammals and livestock, giving me plenty of opportunity to work with a variety of species; including meerkats, Asian short-clawed otters, African pygmy goats, alpacas, Oxford sandy and black pigs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters and a wide range of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. The practical sessions allowed me to assist the animal technicians with daily husbandry tasks, such as; enclosure cleaning and maintenance, preparation and distribution of food, carrying out health checks and administering medication, providing enrichment, and handling and restraining a variety of species.
I completed a three week voluntary position as an animal care assistant, at the National Animal Welfare Trust, as part of my college course. This role allowed me to experience working in a rescue centre, with a variety of animals, such as cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, pigs, and bearded dragons. My main responsibilities at this role included; cleaning out kennels, catteries and small animal enclosures; food preparation and distribution for a variety of species; exercising dogs; socialising dogs, cats and small mammals; land handling a variety of animals.
I have previously worked as a kennel assistant at The Old Pastures Boarding Kennels, which helped me to develop my understanding and maintenance of high animal welfare. My main responsibilities at this role included; daily cleaning of the kennels and outside runs, deep cleaning kennels, preparing and distributing food, administering a range of topical, aural and oral medications, exercising the dogs, providing grooming services, and keeping records on both animal behaviour and health, and any bookings. This job provided me with the opportunity to work by myself and as a team. I was trained on how to work safely and confidently with a variety of dog breeds, sizes and temperaments, as well as developing my understanding of canine behaviour and body language.
